What insurance do I need for a home base training studio?

Hi Evelyn. In addition to the answer you’ve already received, I think that you should probably make sure that you can legally have the studio in your home under your local zoning laws. The worse thing would be to do everything to prepare for your studio (e.g. equipment, insurance etc.) and then find out that the zoning laws do not allow for your business.
You are correct in being concerned not only for your own personal professional liability, but also that of your studio, AND I might add of your home. Talk to your insurance agents to make sure that you are covered ALL around and that you don’t run afoul of your home ownership or home owner’s insurance policy.
My two cents.

My insurance is through IDEAfit https://www.ideafit.com/fitness-insurance and I had it for a very long time and am happy with the service and the price.
The Pilates method alliance also offers insurance for trainers http://www.pilatesmethodalliance.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3299
Good luck with your studio.

LaRue’s response is right on the mark. I have my personal training studio in the basement of my house. Although it is not zoned for business, I am able to have my home-based business with certain restrictions,so definitely check your local zoning laws.
Be sure to discuss your business plan with your insurance agent regarding homeowners insurance. Some insurance companies will not provide coverage for a home-based business that have clients/customers coming to the residence on a regular basis, i.e. training studio. The insurer does not want to insure due to the increase in liability. You may have to switch insurance companies to get the needed coverage, that’s what happened to me. Be prepared to have an increase in the premiums. My agent explained the increase is comparable to the cost for coverage if my studio was located in a commercial building.
Good luck,

Larue’s response is right. make sure you are covered as a trainer where ever you are. Make sure your homeowners insurance covers you, many times they will request you have commercial insurance. It is worth it. And, make sure you are zoned by your city for this business. The city will “shut you down” i know. i opened my first studio in my basement. The neighbors turned me in in less than a month. i was fortunate to find another studio to rent at a price i could afford. Also, it was close to my house. Good luck! Brian Rozzi.
