I charge based on number of sessions purchased, more sessions < per session. Also, I "grandfather in" clients and change rates for new clients, as needed. As long I am reasonable and meeting my business and personal budget I keep rates the same. I also do not raise my rates on existing clients. But if a client is not a regular client, they do not get the set rate. I charge on a sliding scale also, some of what I do requires much more work on my end. And some of what I do is not available from anyone else in my area. My rates are not pre-set. Each client goes through a consultation process. Part of that process includes determining what they want to do, how much they intend to spend, and what that price point will get them. On my web site I show a range of pricing. In the IDEA profile I didn’t have that option so I chose a figure that is about the average fee that I charge.
To answer your question, Beverly, my existing clients know that I have raised my rates. I let them know that that’s part of the perks of being a long-term client, that as a thank you to them, as long as they keep coming, they can keep the old rate.
I only quote my new clients the existing rate, so they may or may not know that others pay less.
As an aside, one of my clients is a marketing exec, and she told me I should raise my rates for everyone. I’m still chewing on that….
While I have thought about it, I have not raised my rates in a long time… Right now I am comfortable with the rates I charge and the clients I bring in–they understand the value in training. Most of my clients are long term.
I may reconsider this for new clients in the New Year, based on my current schedule and availability (I have gotten busier and my time is limited).
