I enjoy a group class for a few reasons…..it gets me out of my head for a while, I don’t have to think about what I am going to do next and when using equipment, in a group class, I am using more core and stability than I would if I were sitting on a piece of equipment out on the the gym floor and I appreciate the energy that other participants bring to the class. I also appreciate DVD’s for my personal use for the same reasons.
As a participant, I prefer a group dynamic. It’s the energy, the cameraderie, the variety, the interaction. I would rather count the hairs on my cat than do weight machines by myself, and I know how to modify my own movements up or down to get the workout that I need from that hour.
As an instructor and trainer, my favorite is the small group. There’s still the energy and group feel, and it really helps retention when I assign people workout partners and they’re accountable to each other. With the smaller group, I can focus more on individual needs than group needs, so clients get a more tailored workout than they would in a large-group class.
Aerobically I prefer a good group fitness class (which I agree Susan very hard to find, I am extremely picky). A good instructor keeps me mentally stimulated way more than equipment. This is why I don’t like running and spinning; they don’t keep me mentally involved enough. I like to be distracted from what I am doing; this does not apply to resistance training; with that I like to focus.
