I often take my clients on walks during their appointments. We walk on a walking path near my office or sometimes I will have them meet me at a trailhead. I have taken clients mountain biking when I lived in Asheville NC, but not so much now that I am in the Charleston SC area. I had several clients in Asheville who had not ridden bikes in years go out a purchase bikes after riding my extra ones. Another thing I have done is to take groups on walks one day per week and encourage them to walk on their own in between group meetings. I suggest they use a pedometer, GPS watch, or an app downloaded to their smart phone, which makes it more interesting to some people. I suggest they go to geodistance.com and map out where they walked if they don’t have a GPS, just so they can see how far they went, etc. I point out that walking outside has been shown to burn more calories due to wind resistance, uneven terrain, etc. and that it also stimulates their brains. I suggest a walking partner as well.
I transition my clients. I take them ice skating to the trampoline park to pretty parks with lots of built in stations. I teach them to use their body weight as resistance and encourage playful types of exercise before getting them into crazy routines. Make sure you take them out early in the morning or later in the evening so that it’s not too hot. Most people are shy at first exercising in public so keep that in mind before taking them to busier spots. Good luck!! I have had great luck with training outside! Love it!!
