Most specialty equipment, TRX included, assumes you have a fitness certification (i.e. group-ex or personal training through ACE, AFAA, NASM, ACSM……) on your own. It, in and of itself, is not a fitness certification.
TRX doesn’t require you to have a cert to take their course. They require you to write a check. But if you want to get a job, most places will only hire you with a base certification.
That said, what do you want to use the TRX for? There are several TRX programs. If you want to teach TRX to groups, then a group-ex certification and their group training course might be right up your alley. If you want to teach TRX to one on one clients, then a personal training certification is the way to go.
If you are looking to get into suspension training, which is still a strong growth area of our industry, you might also take a look at CrossCore. It has a pulley at the top which makes each exercise require more transverse stability. It also makes it great as an assessment and corrective exercise tool because you can see imbalances instantly. They’re a newer company. They’re a smaller company. But they’re also a rapidly growing company; in their first year of business they made it into 26 countries. I taught with TRX 5 classes a week for 2.5 years before switching to CrossCore. Both are fantastic products. I prefer CrossCore for the versatility, particularly for unilateral exercise and transverse plane rotational exercises.
