Doing a Bootcamp 6 week challenge. They want us to do 30 minutes first thing in the morning, eat, then Bootcamp. That is virtually impossible for me without getting up at 3 in the morning and then working all day. They suggested doing it immediately after the bootcamp. I did that today and felt light headed. (Duh) Also – in addition to the Bootcamp classes I am attending I teach 4 other cardio classes and 4 strength/yoga type classes. I feel like I need to fuel more. Thoughts?
Hello Maggie Barclay,
It sounds as if you need to eat something first. You are already very physically active and need to find a way to better balance your activity level with nutrition and rest. It has been found that those who eat later in the day are not hungry for breakfast. Listen to your body and do what it needs…not always what you want.

In your case, it sounds like you need to eat at least a little bit before you get going in the morning. It also sounds like you are finding your limit as far as workout volume is concerned. You might need to back off on the participation in one of each of the classes you teach. I let my hunger and energy level determine my pre-workout intake. I try not to eat too much before and focus more on my post exercise meal. But that is an individual thing. There is more research supporting post workout protein/carb intake than pre workout. I take all research with a bit of skepticism. And then apply the findings personal to evaluate it.
I think you answered your own question. :). Yes, your body needs more fuel. The right type of program is what works for you as an individual. You are very active so your body needs more fuel, and especially if you are getting lightheaded. (Don’t let anyone tell you any differently). You do have a lot of classes and your own program going, so please be careful with your workout schedule. You may be overtraining which can lead to fatigue, injuries, irritability, and a host of other symptoms.
P.S.–I’m a little confused by the bootcamp program–you are supposed to do cardio, eat, and then another workout with the bootcamp? Seems like the bootcamp would be enough if it included strength plus cardio in it. Just curious!
You are a busy woman :-)!
Well, as far as eating before the morning workout, it’s totally up to you. Personally I like to workout in the morning and I do it with an empty stomach (with the exception of some coffee). I have clients who prefer to workout with empty stomachs and then I have others who can’t do it unless they had something to eat first. I know there are researches out there that recommend to eat before working out but I like to leave it to the client (as long as they are not diabetics or have some other medical condition where eating before working out is mandatory/recommended). As for eating right after working out, again it’s up to the individual. Some can do it, others can’t (unless they really have too).
You can try some light energy bars between workouts and see how that goes. If you know how many calories you burn, you should be able to come up with the right amount that you need to take in order to have the energy to accomplish your goals each day. After few days you will know which is the best formula for you. There is really no right or wrong answer here. It will be interesting to see what others suggest here.
