What are the competencies to work as a fitness instructor? What the instructor should know? How are your abilities?
So your question is help finding articles, not the opinions of the instructors on this message forum? Let me see if I can link you some…
…but I’m guessing that there are a lot of talented instructors here who could give you their input…
Mother Theresa has a quote about there not being a single way to be a perfect mother, but a lot of ways to be a good one. In my opinion, it’s the same for fitness.
Hi Keila,
the best would be to read the ACE Group Fitness Instructor Manual which many GFIs in the US in preparation for the certification.
Rules in Brazil may be different as to whether or not you are required to have a certification but this book will give you all your answer about group fitness. Here is a link http://www.amazon.com/Ace-Group-Fitness-Instructor-Manual/dp/1890720372/….

Karin,
Thanks for your answer. In brazilian fitness industry is necessary to have a degree graduation to work in this area. Even after the degree graduation the fitness instructors here tell not be safes about them abilities. Seem to be some problem in this degree in physical education. In the true, I have developed some researches about competencies, knowledge and abilities to work as group fitness instructor. If you could help me about this subject and what are your challenges in this work?
I’ll be so happy with your answer.
Well, i want to excuse about my bad english and to say that i’m satisfied with your answer.
Thank you.

There is more than one way to answer this question. Nancy has given you a philosophical answer, and Karin a pragmatic one. I would agree with both. If you want to understand the specific topics and information a person must have to be a group exercise professional there is no better way than to read the manual for one of the major national certifying organizations. I own and have used the ACE manual and agree it would answer your questions specifically and thoroughly. And Nancy is correct that the way that information is understood and applied varies with each fitness professional. Our clients/students are each unique, and each of us must be flexible in the way we meet those needs.
Also, keep in mind that there are different sorts of fitness professionals, and the requirements differ for those different areas. For example, although there are some training programs that allow one to work in limited ways with nutritional information, to work fully in that area as a nutritionist requires a degree and licensure. Someone who works with the martial arts requires training within that specific field.
I don’t think we can answer you more fully as to answer the question you pose is to ask both for a full instructor manual (which you can get much better by buying something like the ACE manual) and a meditation on our life work.
