I have just finished reading the book ‘Spark’ by John Ratey where the positive impact of aerobic exercise on brain function is described.
Based on what I read there, I would suggest aerobics exercise which should raise the heart rate to about 65 to 75 % of MHR. If you can find an activity that the person is quite familiar with, that would be ideal. But the main concern is safety.
However, I would definitely require a physician’s approval when working with this population.

Along with Karin Singleton’s suggestions, I will add balance and gait work to get the person’s mind firing multidimensionally. The best of anything is finding what the person enjoys doing so they will continue without frustration, in this case, finding cardio, like walking, which most everyone enjoys. I still prefer a balanced program with strength and flexibility, not just cardio, to really hit the body from all angles…no matter the age or condition.
Just be aware, the more active they become, the quicker they wander off.

Tough to answer without more client info. The answers provided already are wonderful but sometimes the clients are depressed and unmotivated, or mentally difficult to instruct.
If that’s the case I’d inject some fun with throwing a balloon in the air and traveling distances (think volleyball serve), outside on different safe surfaces. Ask if they used to play any sports and make up a game around that. Whatever you do, make it fun, interesting, positive and think outside the box! You are the highlight of their day.
