What are the benefits of cross-training?
Doing only one form of training (the opposite of cross training) is like only reading certain words. Eventually you will be able to read those words very quickly whenever you see them. But you will not be getting any smarter or better able to read.
Life is cross training. Mowing the yard isn’t like trimming the hedge. Vacuuming the carpet isn’t like painting the ceiling. So, as in life, you should experience different forms of exercise to improve how you are living and live how you are improving. I really wish Confucius had said that last one. I really do.
Muscles need to be surprised and used in a variety of ways in order for them to constantly respond and improve.
Doing the same things over and over again is so BORING to the mind and muscles.
Cross training comes in so many variations, it’s the way to go!
I always tell my clients “muscles have memory” let’s shake that memory up!
To me, the two biggest benefits of cross-training is to help avoid overuse injury by using your body in ways different from your ‘normal’ uses, and to keep things fresh by allowing an ‘escape’ from your normal routine.
