Anyone who is interested in working in maternal fitness should be up to date on the current ACOG guidelines and research in the field of maternal fitness. The key to safe and effective prenatal and postpartum exercise design is understanding the physiological changes that occur during pregnancy, and having the skills to effectively modify exercise throughout pregnancy and during postpartum recovery.
There is still quite a lot of misinformation that’s not evidence based concerning the effect of exercise on pregnancy and the fetus, and it’s important to be able to motivate and reassure pregnant women who have uncomplicated pregnancies that exercise is good for them as well as their babies.

The course, “Prenatal and Postpartum Exercise Design: is a comprehensive CE certificate course that provides all the information a trainer needs to work in the field of maternal fitness.

I like the Fit to Deliver book and certification. They do a very through job and have been around for a while.

Hi Melody,

I saw in your profile that you are well-credentialed (and a fellow instructor in North Carolina)..

I am not sure how far you want to take the information on prenatal yoga but there is actually an organization here in NC who certifies in that specialty. Here is the link: http://www.theyogaconnectionnc.com/pre_and_postnatal_training.shtml?gcli…

Wish you good luck.

Going to IDEA conventions, staying current with CECs particularly with those pertaining to your interests, consulting with a doctor or prenatal nurse and following the guidelines of your primary care Obgyn.

Hello Melody,

I agree with Joanne. You can also find a person who specializes in prenatal health and fitness. Keep that ACSM guideline handy, too.
Take care.
