And the term refers to those three nutrients being the bulk of our intake. These are large amounts as compared to micro nutrients that are vitamins, minerals, and certain other chemical compounds (phytochemcials, etc.). Macro nutrients are usually measure in grams. Micronutrients are often very small amounts., miligrams to nanograms.
In reading the macros on nutrition labels, let’s look at an example of Cherios cereal.
Serving size 3/4 cup
In this 3/4 cup serving there are:
Calories = 110
Total fat = 1 gram
Total carbohydrates = 23.31 grams
* dietary fiber = 1.2 grams
* sugars = 12 grams
Protein = 2 grams
1 gram of fat x 9 calories per gram = 9
23.31 grams total carbohydrate x 4 calories per gram = 93.24
2 grams protein x 4 calories per gram = 8
Adding 9 + 93.24 + 8 = 110.24 rounding out to 110 calories
The nutrition contents on nutrition labels are always broken down to show the amount of carbohydrate, fat, and protein per serving.
