Definitely a not happening in the gym situation. All trainers should have their phones off during trainng. I think I would have handled it similarly. A look, a don’t do that please discussion, etc. Repeats would mean that there is a bigger problem than just TWT. It is a lack of respect for the gym, the client and the profession.
I have a trainer (small boutique gym) who is habitually late & constantly texts, which rarely if ever has anything to do with business. Yes, it bothers me to no end.
The way you handeld the situation was a good thing minus the “look”.
At the same time, if the trainers texting or ipad activity doesn’t bother the client he’s with that’s between the trainer and the client.
If you trainer’s cell/text activity during “your” session bothers and distracts from you getting what you’ve paid for, then in my opinion you have a right to discuss this with him/her off gym floor and even expect a free make-up session(s).
A “Personal” trainer is hired to be attentive to you, your goals and training during your session. Texting, walking away, scoping the gym or parking lot, and or having conversations with others during your session is unprofessional and should be discretely discussed.
Hope my response helped.
Only you know the dynamic of your gym.
It’s unfortunate that many are addicted to their electronic devices and haven’t yet learned how to find a proper balance.
If the texting is not habitual, that I wouldn’t stress it. However, if the trainer is texting hourly I think this would necessitate a meeting.
Regarding my trainer, was texting/looking at email. Every circumstance is different, but even if the client doesn’t see you, believe me others will. And if they do make a decision to train, it is highly unlikely they will choose you as a trainer.
Also, if you continually text/view email or allow your trainers to take any call during training sessions with clients it will reflect poorly on your team, just my added thoughts.
I would like to clarify on my response. I have my phone with me at all times because I use the stopwatch and I like having my note pad and calendar at my fingertips in case my client has questions pertaining to scheduling and or is asking me to email them information and visa versa.
I also like to be able to pull up certain Apps when a particular subject comes up.
It’s no different than having a clipboard which I see all the time
As for the trainer texting, talk it out and express your concern.
