To all my fellow fitness professionals that were working in 1989 please view this video and comment, thanks!
Even if you were not working back then, please add your comments on your perspective on this video. Is it incredible how much our industry has changed?

Hi Phillip,
I was working in the industry then but I’m a little lost – you steered me to a broken link to a Taylor Swift video. Help me out so I can understand this better.

If it’s a Taylor Swift video, then he probably linked you to the 1989 aerobics championships. Several clips of dance aerobics team and pair competitors were spliced together to go along with Taylor’s song, “Shake it Off.”
Some of those people are still in fitness!
I remember those days, with my thong leotards over tights or bra top and thong over tights.
It may look silly in hindsight, but I loved those days. Before I could start teaching, I had to take a 56-hour training course, complete an in-house mentoring program, and sit for a group-ex certification. We had to have class design skills before we could teach. IMO, today’s fitness (more group-ex than personal training) has become more marketing driven. Instructors are being told, and believing, that they need to purchase and teach someone else’s programs rather than their own.
