Does each exercise have to start at the beginning of a 32 count phrase ie grapevine on count one and ending on count thirty two or could I start grapevine at count sixteen of the first phrase and end it at say count sixteen of the next phrase? What I am really asking is can I overlap 32 count phrases with the same exercise and do I have to start and end the class on count one and thirty two?
It really depends on what classes you are teaching. For example, if you are teaching a step class, then it becomes more important to teach on the 32 count starting a block at the top of the phrase. If you are teaching a class where you are just going to the beat, then although it is very helpful, it’s not as necessary. Timed interval classes is a place where it doesn’t matter what beat you start on…
Once you learn to teach at the top of the phrase, it becomes second nature and difficult to stay off it. 🙂
