Tax deduction for workout clothes
Just because you would choose not to wear them elsewhere or would normally choose a different color or style does not make the purchase deductible. The IRS is very clear about “uniforms”. If your workout gear for your fitness business is embroidered with your company name and/or logo, it is a “uniform”. Otherwise, you’re not entitled to take it as a deduction. Fair? No. But the IRS doesn’t claim to be fair or even use common sense. But the regulations are very clear. Good luck!
It simply depends on where you work. If you are a W2 employee, it might be difficult. If you get any 1099, then I agree with all the above people who said you CAN. My previous (note the tense) accountant said exactly what you were told.
I workout at home in a sports bra and cut-off sweat shorts.
I don’t buy sneakers for turf or other surfaces, expensive workout clothing, specific shirts and shorts, 4-5 one piece swim suits and 2 pair of aquatic shoes a year, expecting to wear them to the beach or a movie another time. All my work is 1099 and I’m required to look a specific way.
My new and wonderful ~by the book~ accountant has no problem deducting all of these things.
