risk involved with having loose collars on barbells and how you could minimise the risk?

Hi Jacqueline,

Loose collars allow plates to slide off the bar. This can cause serious problems especially if the lifter performs an uneven lift.

The best way to prevent this is to check collars on a regular basis. Look for any damage and replace any broken collars.

Hi Jacqueline,
Most of the barbell collars I see now are spring-loaded. They should lock in place. If they’re sliding back-and-forth easily, don’t trust them.

Nothing to add to the other comments. If they are loose then either buy new collars and/or let the manager know about it and have him/her order some new to replace the defective ones. In the mean time use a barbell that is safe and in good condition.
