Recommended exercises after rotator cuff surgery
Hi Nancee,
I also had rotator cuff surgery :-(. As Susan said: no fun. In addition to the PT guidelines, here is what I do not do:
Upright rows and lateral raises straight out to the side. I still do rotator cuff exercises even though my surgery was a long time ago. I am careful about the load of upper body exercises. I do overhead presses but with rather light weight; they do’t bother me but I am always cautious.
Since I am a MELT instructor, I do all the MELT length and strength movements for the upper body and found those very helpful.

One of the most important things to keep in mind for any post surgery situation and particularly for the shoulder, is to start very small and light and progress slowly and regress at the first sign of an issue. Always get clearance to work with surgery clients. Follow recommendations to the letter. And ask for quidance as much as possible.
If all of the above are in place, a complete evaluation of the client would be wisest. The more and better you understand the “whole” client, the better job you will be able to do in helping them.
