Pronation Disytortion?
I’m training my first customer and I did the overhead and single leg squat assesments to verify posture, muscles imbalances, etc. And she did fine. So I thought it was going to be easy. I decided to include burpees to make it a little bit more intense yesterday. But when she have to return to the squat position to jump up her knees move inward. She didn’t do that on the assesments why now? Is it pronation distortion syndrome? Or it was too soon to expose her to an exercise like that? She was doing everything ok in the past sessions. I show her how to modify the burpees but she didn’t want
to. She notice that wasn’t doing it like me but if is pronation distortion how do I tell her? That will change everything. I will appreciate your comments and suggestions.
Thanks,
Annette
Hi Annette,
My first question to you is – where is she at as far as her training level goes? Is she just starting out? If that’s the case, you may want to start her with more controlled movements, like stability ball squats and stationary lunges – the basics. That way, she’ll develop a good base level of strength & then can progress to more challenging exercises later on. The burpee is not a beginner exercise & can get pretty sloppy, particularly with someone who is deconditioned – that could very well be why you’re seeing the knee issue. Good luck Annette & keep us all posted.

Hi Annette,
you do not need to second-guess your assessment. It may well be the she did fine in the assessment and that you did not miss anything there. What you are finding in the jump squats are deficiencies in landing mechanics.
It sounds to me that you have progressed a little too aggressively. As Paul said, the burpee is not an easy exercise.
I also would not throw the term ‘pronation distortion syndrome’ at her. Just tell her that you observed that her knees move inward on landing and that you want to improve her hip stabilization first before trying it again.
Good luck.

Thanks both!! Paul, yes she is in phase 1 stabilization. This week will be her 3rd week and I’ve been doing everything by the book. I think I messed up with the burpee just don’t want her to get bored. And she doesn’t she loves the sessions so far. Actually I include lunges this week and more movements in an ustable but safety environment so she can improve in the balance and strength. Thanks for the input it was very helpful.
