program needs, expectations and limitations for a 25 year old male who regularly runs 10km road races
doing a fitness course and struggling to answers this question I said he probably needs to work on other fitness aspect like resistance training and flexibility because his cardio is obviously good. What other needs and expectations do you think he needs?? Also what sort of limitations would their be for a young 25 year old male already doing some exercise??
Good thoughts from others…
I would add…
After a thorough physical assessment looking at multiple components of strength, mobility, conditioning, injury/health history, co-ordination, balance, etc. I would assess the style of running this athlete is using and how that holds up over an extended period of time. I would also be interested in knowing how the metabolism is supporting this style and efficiency of running.
From there it would be nice to discuss principles of movement, namely the necessity to assess and reassess multiple components of athleticism to ensure long tern health and safety. For a runner foot strength is essential since the foot and ankle provide up to 80% of the power in the running pattern based upon form. If the feet break down then the superior anatomical components will begin to take more load and perhaps cause and injury. The integration of the bodies systems in this case would be muscles, bones, nerves, lungs and heart is essential, especially if superior athletic performance is desired. Of course, the stability of the spine and core are essential with optimal range of movement through the limbs to prevent unnecessary internal resistance. Finally, I would coach on beginning from the inside and working out; meaning developing breathing patterns from a stationary supine position and progressing through low impact movements that mimic the running stride. There are many modalities that would support this philosophy including waterwork, ballwork, and footwork.
Let me know if you need any help in the future.
