I normally work with mid age adults when it comes to Personal Training. Although I do have experience with kids when it comes to group classes(I teach martial arts part time outside my PT). However one of my Personal Training clients has asked me to work one day a week one on one with his son. And I was just looking for some advice when it comes to working with students that age. Due to the fact that hes to young for a PAR-Q would permission from the parents and basic medical information be sufficient in its place? Any advice would be appreciated.
I use the PAR Q with all clients because it is consider an “industry standard”, but I use a detailed history questionairre for really getting to what I need to know.
Working with younger clients isn’t that much different than working with any other age group. You want to make it effective and enjoyable. But what a 14 year old finds to be enjoyable may not be the same as a 40 year old (but it might). So you need to try and make it relate to the client and read them for feedback as well as ask for feedback. I make exercises more like games for younger clients (and for some of my older clients). And I do a lot more interactive exercise with them as well (I like interactive exercise with clients as long as it doesn’t compromise safety).
Experience and knowledge are always the best way to help guide you with any client. Spend time doing some research and digging for new ideas. I bet you will be able to use some of the things you learn in you Martial Arts classes as well.
Why did you even agree to private activities with a child? I now prefer to deal with people who are over 20 years old. It’s easier for me to get along with them than with children.
