This is my first question and as many know obesity is a very dear subject of mine considering I used to be obese myself. I would like to get opinions on this topic. There has been an abundance of new material posted regarding this topic. Let me know your thoughts!
Fuel the Movement,
I think that may be too extreme. Sometimes genetics factors greatly into obesity, and you cant take kids away from their parents due to genetics. I think there are better ways to address the obesity in kids epidemic.
Absolutely not..It must be proven that neglect was involved. There could be underlying circumstance with the childs obesity. Parents must learn proper nutrition in caring for their children as well. But it can be done. Im glad to hear you are so vigilant on this topic!
Why punish the child? I think it’s a matter of educating the parents. We have become a fast food working world, very few are paying attention to what’s going in their own bodies let alone their childs. Parents are taking the easy way out by going to fast food “restaurants”, buying packaged foods, not getting involved in the school menu choices. On the other hand I have noticed at many clothing store “Plus Juniors” sections which feeds right into it. Two income families are working forty hours a week, are overwhelmed in this economy and can’t even think about exercise?!
Until there is a ban on processed foods (which will never happen) or a huge protest to eating crap, this will continue. Until we hit a crisis, nothing will happen even though I feel we have hit it.
Children learn what they see.
Uhhh, “no!” Not unless there is evidence and PROOF that the child’s obesity is linked to the parents’ behavior or lack thereof. As you know, there are so many causes of obesity, some due to behaviors that we can control and affect, and other’s that are not. Before something as drastic as removing a child from their parents (which could have a profound impact on the child as well as the parents) you’d have to be CLEAR that the child’s obesity is directly related to something that is/was within the parents control.
