I have been struggling to find work since becoming certified and was curious if someone had any recommendations on where to gain experience in my area? I am located in the Kakamazoo/West Michigan area, I have a Bachelors degree in Kinesiology and am certified as a CPT, ACSM. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Get involved with your community, join any clubs that may interest you. Maybe offer workouts to stay at home moms as a group workout, check out Meetups.com. You may want to think about doing some group training then pulling from there, if you feel qualified.
Or start an outdoor bootcamp, it’s great exposure.
Also, wear T shirts that have your logo on them, put a magnet on your car with your business info.
Possibly write for your local paper, fitness tips?
Hi again Jacqueline,
I forgot to mention Grand Rapids, Lansing and Holland. I remember when I used to visit these areas there were a few small personal training studios where you can do some work there. They are not that far form the Kalamazoo area (Lansing is a bit further). Another thing you could consider is to contact the local chambers of commerce to get some connections. I’m not sure how far you are willing to drive every day though.
Have you tried to network with any of the established trainers in your area? Or look into whether any of the studios have independent contractor agreements to use the facility? Often trainers who operate their own studio are looking to bring someone in, but they haven’t met the right trainer.
I have moved a few times and most of the time, I found a part-time job asap on arriving in town. It didn’t matter what it was, as long as I was willing and able to do it. Then I networked as much as possible. I got quality business cards and gave them out to anyone that would take them. I told all the people that I met that I was “a starving artist looking to make some money as a personal trainer to support my art”. And when I finally got some clients, I treated (and still do) them like they were more important than money. Some of those people are still working with me now after 15 and 20 years. I try to teach all clients how to work out on their own, but I will work with anyone who stills enjoys my programs for as long as they want.
