Just passed my NASM CPT Exam, now what?
I’m about to take my GFI exam with ACSM and I want to be a group fitness instructor in a Dallas TX fitness center. My experience in group fitness is almost 6 months and I want to find a fitness job before I relocate to Dallas from CO. What is the average salary for a GFI? Any suggestions are welcome, thanks in advance.
Hi Debbie,
group fitness classes are usually paid at an hourly rate. It varies by location. Here in Raleigh, it ranges to about $25 to $30 for a class that is open without an extra charge to members.
Many clubs hire easily for group fitness because, as a part time employee, they can check you out as you go. Often clubs look for instructors with a wide variety of class experiences, and while the ACSM GFI certification is great, many clubs will want you to teach different formats.
How much money you make really depends on how many classes you teach. Personal training is more lucrative, and instructors usually have training privileges at the clubs they teach. It also enables you to get exposure to many more people who can check you out in classes and assess whether they would like you for personal training.
It is not an easy start, though, and you should not expect to make much money at first as you are trying to get yourself established.
