Is there an upper limit on how many clients I can legally oversee in a group class as a personal trainer?
Are you a trainer?
No group-x certification is needed (although it would be helpful to have one). But, a liability insurance and the ability to instruct groups of people is a must. Usually up to 12 participants it shouldn’t be a problem for someone who knows what he/she is doing and has experience with this type of instruction.
Harris’s answer is right on. I think that certification is essential, although not mandatory, as well as liability insurance. Some sources which provide liability coverage do require certification from a qualifying organization. I agree that up to 12 participants is a good limit to provide instruct safely and effectively.
Take care, have a great holiday season.
Legally, no requirement.
Practically, a group-ex certification is important.
They’re vastly different skills. I started in group-ex and moved into personal training, so my experience is in the reverse of yours. In group, you have to be able to oversee and manage a group of exercisers who may or may not be at the same fitness level. You are constantly scanning the individuals, you need to have progressions and regressions planned for almost every move, and your instructions have to be very clear (in most cases there isn’t time for tell / show / do), and you have to plan a flow. Also, there are rules (aka “contraindications”) that are in place for group classes – things that a certified instructor would not do in a group class because we don’t have time to assess them and see a Par-Q.
The good news is, since it’s bodyweight only, that you won’t have to worry about switching in and out of handweights etc.
People can be good at both. I am. But if you’ve never had to manage a group class before, it will take some planning.
I should add this.
Adding on a group-ex certification would probably be relatively easy study-wise if you are already a certified personal trainer. The anatomy / physiology is the same, and that seems to be a piece that takes people some time to learn. The biggest topics that are different are:
1) Class design (that’s only two words but it’s a lot of education)
2) Contraindications
3) Class management (verbal cuing, visual cueing, use of music if you’re using any)
