I have an instructor who has cancelled or had subs for her classes 25% of the time in the last year. Is there an industry standard in regards to how much “time off” an instructor can take without affecting her obligations to her students and the class? 25% would be equivalent to 1 in 4 classes which I feel is excessive. This makes me wonder about her true commitment to the class. What do you think would be an appropriate percentage amount to require of an instructor?
Hi Maggie. I agree with some of the other posters. While there may not be an “industry standard” for this situation (as well as many other situations that may arise in the context of our fitness business), something like this really comes down to a management decision. What seems/feels right to you guys? At what point has this instructor, or any other for that matter, crossed the line. Creating standards and policies for all of your instructors to live by is probably necessary here so that instead of dealing with situations like this one on a case-by-case basis, you will have a standard that everyone KNOWS and is expected to abide by. That way, when you are forced to discipline someone, they can’t say that they didn’t know what was expected of them. I wish you good luck!
