I have an instructor who has cancelled or had subs for her classes 25% of the time in the last year. Is there an industry standard in regards to how much “time off” an instructor can take without affecting her obligations to her students and the class? 25% would be equivalent to 1 in 4 classes which I feel is excessive. This makes me wonder about her true commitment to the class. What do you think would be an appropriate percentage amount to require of an instructor?
I do not believe that there is an industry standard but it appears that you may need to institute a facility standard.
I teach classes myself, and we are given ample opportunity to request ‘time off’. Since we all have other obligations, this is not a problem if commnicated well in advance. However, once a schedule is posted and members of the club expect the class to happen as announced, the instructor is expected to teach unless there are very good reasons (illness, emergencies).
If your instructor has those emergencies in 25% of her classes, there seem to be an issue, and you have a valid reason to question her commitment.
