Is overhead press exercise safe with someone who suffered a whiplash neck injury and why?
I can see where Danielle Vindez is coming from, but I would take a different approach to this question.
I would argue that it would depend how recent their neck injury and how far along their treatment is.
The OHP is a great way to hit the delts, traps and also uses the chest and arms as synergists. This would be a great way to stimulate bone and muscle growth to help them heal as long as you think they have progressed enough to add compound lifts to their workout.
Good answers. There are lots of variables, as Mac suggests, and they are all important. Extent of the injury? How completely has it healed? What shoulder exercises are currently being completed? Most important–What does your client’s physician/physical therapist say in response to your question.
Take care.
