Another thing to consider next March so you can market in May, is how to capitalize on peoples’ summer activities. One trainer I know does Saturday morning outdoor bootcamps during the summer only, and has been increasingly sucessful over the last three years as word of mouth spreads and as he uses his Spring classes for advertising.
Another trainer friend recruited a group for extreme race training (Spartan Race, mud races, warrior dash, etc.) It’s basically a bootcamp, but with themed trainings that relate to the different obstacles that are in the race they’re training for. They just had their first even last weekend and are training for one that is later in the summer. So he is using his training skills to support their summer outdoor activities.
Yes! The summer months can be slower with training–as this business can be very cyclical. Enjoy the down time, and for sure things will pick up again in September when work and school schedules are back in swing.
You can supplement by doing small group training or group fitness classes if you teach.
In addition, it could also be a good time to reach out to prior clients as a follow up to see how they are doing. It’s a good time to keep your connections going and make new ones.
I agree with what has already been posted. My regulars stay with me throughout the summer and my volume with them goes down slightly because almost everyone takes a vacation here or there. New leads slow down more than that.
The best way I’ve found to be busy in July and August is to market well in April and May to build up my client base so that when it naturally drops off over summer, I’ll still have a reasonable workload. This year, I wanted more time with my family so I didn’t shore up my business in April and May because I welcomed the natural drop after school gets out through the summer. But in past years, I’ve advertised my personal training and small-group classes really hard in Spring to have in and solid before summer. I also run group-ex contests and events during the summer to keep people interested, since a good portion of my training clients come from my group-ex classes.
I agree as well. These two months are usually the slowest as far as leads goes. Many people are using these months for their vacation especially since kids are out of school and the weather is great for trips and other adventures. It’s a great time to regroup and think of new ways of how to generate more income and brainstorm new ideas.
