My answer to your question is an emphatic YES. I’m in the Philadelphia, PA area and if I had a dollar for every training lead I got in the dead of summer for the last 33 years, I probably would still not have enough for a decent lunch. It’s not that I’m not busy with my clients, but new leads just don’t seem to happen at that time. For me, it’s a great time to take a vacation & regroup. Recharge your batteries & gear up for the Fall. Don’t worry – it’s not just you.
Hello Kelly Gibson,
No worries; new leads will seek you out when they have more time. Children are home from school and families spend vacation time together. Those new leads you get later will need programs for the road next summer…from you, of course. Yes, slow times are normal…time to catch up on reading/studying or take your own vacation as Paul Thomas suggests.

Yep, July and August are usually slower (I guess this is what’s meant by the dog days of summer?)
I seen slow months for at least the past 3-4 years* but this summer has been extremely slow.
The lull appears to be seasonal; people go on vacation and don’t think about personal training a lot.
See how things are in the fall.
Hope it works out!
*I’ve been a trainer for over 10 years
I was just saying that to someone….years that the weather is bad my classes are much fuller. I keep running into regular students who will say things like “I will be there if the weather isn’t beautiful”. Well, if our goal is to help people have balanced lives them taking time to be outside, in their yards, on the bike path, all that is important.
And yes, in decades in fitness, doing training in years past, and mostly yoga now, in more than one market, August is always dead. Getting busy in Sept. is more normal, and it sounds like that is what you have experienced. Of course it dies down a bit near Christmas, and then gets really busy in Jan…..
If you can do group fitness, there are usually opportunities to sub for people so they can go away. I always like to do so if I can, as it is nice to help out others, and build community with your peers. I also know some people who offer online training, or video subscriptions for regulars who will be away over the summer.
Or you could use the extra time off to recharge yourself, or organize your forms, or catch up on reading, or do some training. Maybe that is why the IDEA world is in August ….
