Yes, exercise is fine; use common sense and listen to the body. Make sure your doctors know what is going on, too.
You may also want to keep a detailed log of everything you do during the day. This will give you a reference to see what works and what causes harm.
Heidi, because of the complexity of the shoulder joint, and the potential chronic condition of a rotator cuff injury, I would HIGHLY recommend speaking with your physician. Based on that conversation and any follow-up recommendations/treatments, you can then make an ‘informed decision’ about what course to take.

A rotator cuff injury doesn’t preclude one from engaging in physical activity.
Your physical therapist will likely prescribe exercises to help strengthen your shoulder girdle.
Too, one has to take into the degree of the injury. I would wonder whether you have a tear or a rupture. Whatever the case, there is plenty to do other than utilized the injured part of the body.
You should, however, consult with your orthopedic surgeon as well as your physical therapist to determine how you should proceed.
