just about to push to go into a career as a personal trainer and was just woundering if I can do half in a gym half as a personal trainer so I will be able to build my client basis up without jumping in the deep end, cause I still need a steady income and cant afford to be earning basically nothing in my first month. I have been told its illegal to do so by someone but sounded like bull**** as I know some people who have done it. just need some clarifaction or some documentation to show if it is or is not. any help is appreciated.
You can be self employed and also work in a gym at the same time, but I guess it depends on whether or not you have a contract with the gym. The gym/facility you choose may want you to sign a contract with an non-solicitation clause saying you will not solicit their clients for your business. A non-compete is also used by some, but I would never sign a non-compete with anyone, personally. You may want to consult an attorney if you can to go over the legalities and any contracts involved.
I have my own in-home training business, train at a local rec center, and also do some independent contracting around town (and yes, there are fees involved). It works for me.
Best of luck to you!
