is it illegal to work at a gym and as a self employed personal trainer at the same time??
just about to push to go into a career as a personal trainer and was just woundering if I can do half in a gym half as a personal trainer so I will be able to build my client basis up without jumping in the deep end, cause I still need a steady income and cant afford to be earning basically nothing in my first month. I have been told its illegal to do so by someone but sounded like bull**** as I know some people who have done it. just need some clarifaction or some documentation to show if it is or is not. any help is appreciated.
Hello Adam Beattie,
It is illegal if you sign a non compete agreement with a gym. You might do best to work in a gym; since, that is where most of the serious clients are looking for personal training, in order for you to have steady income in the beginning.
You could also work as an independent contractor in a gym; but, would still owe fees to the gym.
Speak with the gym owner/manager to find out what option is the right fit for you and if you like that place. Try visiting different places you may want to work and see how the environment feels during different times and days of the week.
Good luck with your career.
Take care,
Natalie aka NAPS 2 B Fit.
