Is a recovery drink vital while I reaaaaaaally lean up my diet ?
My Male friend who is 34 years old and is doing Crossfit is wondering if a recovery drink is vital while he reaaaaaaally leans up his diet to lose about 4-6% bodyfat (?) he say it is important to take so that his body doesnt begin to metabolize his lean mass, but could it hinder him and slow the fat loss progression… which is the lesser evil?
Hi Rebecca,
If he’s taking in an adequate amount of protein & calories, he shouldn’t be losing any lean body mass. But if he is losing weight, then it’s inevitable that he’ll lose some lean mass – that’s the trade off. Personally, I wouldn’t be wasting my money on all these pre, post, during (whatever) drinks. Use that money towards good quality food – that’s where the real useful nutrients are.

Hi Rebecca,
I am with Paul on this one. There is value in eating appropriately before and after a workout but is does not have to come in the form of any of those shakes and drinks.

There is no requirement by our bodies to take in a specific recovery product. We can adequately refuel and protect our bodies with a blend of carbs and proteins post workout. If he is training for long periods of time or in a particularly heated area he can add back electrolytes in the form of salt and other food additives to meet his needs.
