Insurance in more than one state
I’m an ACE certified personal trainer currently living in Iowa. I’m looking to renew my liability insurance soon but I was wondering if there is a way to be covered in Iowa AND Virginia at the same time under one policy. Philadelphia Insurance Company is one I’m considering but I can’t find info about the coverage area. My girlfriend is from Iowa but almost everyone I know is in Virginia so I would like to keep both options open. I also think it would be fun to do seasonal(part-year) training in Virginia if possible. Does anyone know if there is national coverage available?
Hello Andrew Halligan,
I personally do not know.
Have you been in contact with the insurance companies? They would be the ones to best help you; along with your business lawyer. Your insurance company just may have something for you if you contact them to speak with an agent.
I wish I could be of more help.
Enjoy your state hopping.
Take care,
Natalie.
Hi Andrew,
the following is from their web site on the question whether trainers need to submit a list of facilities where they train:
“No, since the policy is designed to cover the policyholder in all 50 states, it is not necessary to provide a list of locations.”

Hi Andrew. Since personal trainers are NOT individually licensed State-by-State (at least not yet), your liability insurance coverage should go with you no matter which State you are training in. I would highly recommend simply speaking with a representative from whatever insurer you decide on – tell them what your needs are, and take notes of what they tell you. If you decide to insure with them, follow-up your telephone conversation with them with a writing (email) summarizing your understanding of what they’ve said so that you have something for your records.
I hope that this helps.
