Inner IDEA Convention? Other mind-body conventions?
Rather than a convention I prefer a long training. A convention favors small workshops on many topics, which I enjoy for fitness, and which I think works for mind body or yoga training for those who use it within work that is more fitness based. I find with yoga what really gives me the best experience is something that is intense on one topic, and in a place that also gives me the yoga community (and therefore the opportunity, not to network, which again, is one of the things that something like and IDEA convention does really well, but to connect deeply and converse deeply)
Now, it looks like you are on the other coast, so my favorite place is likely a bit far for you, but I really love to go to Kripalu, in the Berkshires. It has a very long and interesting history, but in the last 20 or 30 years it has been a center for yoga and wellness training. They do teacher training, and they have rest and renew weekends, but they also offer yoga programs, many of which offer CEs. Just going to the center is a renewing experience: the food is healthy and natural, they have acres of land where one can walk, the views are amazing… it is in the mountains, (there are rooms with big windows looking out over the hills, where talking is not allowed and one can meditate or just read, and the programs offer some of the absolute best people in the world. It is a different sort of experience, but one that, I feel, deepens my understanding and teaching skills every time I have been able to go.
I am less familiar with the west coast. There may be other centers there. The thing is, you either have very traditional Ashrams, like Yogaville, that are probably too much for most people (more truly religious, and very much not about comfort, and sometimes very structured), though will for some, or you have ‘fitness’ yoga, that might give moves and information, in the same way a class on how to break down dance excercise choreography might, where you loose some of the depth tha tmakes yoga what it is. kripalu is in some ways almost unique. It used to be an Ashram, and after the great trouble when Amrit Desai left they worked hard to reinvent the place to make it accesible for a Western person, spiritual, but non denominational, and keeping the emphasis on having he best trainings and teachers in the world.
I know the Alliance sponsors some ‘business of yoga’ groups, which probably has value. They are also located on the East coast, but they offer a number of things online.
