Hi. I run small group fitness classes. My classes are known for providing great workouts but I think I need to emphasize more the goal setting/tracking aspect of the training. I currently offer a free trial class to try out my gym. I was thinking of converting that free class into an initial consultation session or at least requiring an initial consult to become a full member. I am concerned thought that initial consult will appear as a barrier for people who really like my classes and want to get started “today”. What are your opinions? Am I overthinking this?
Hello Melanie Fenwick,
For group classes I insist on signing a waiver and a quick health assessment so I am aware of what to keep an eye on. The participant is responsible for their own care/RPE; but, I am the professional who is in charge of helping them stay in their range.
Other than that, you could provide an incentive for a more thorough consult by addressing the fact of reaching goals in a safer and quicker manner. Also, we get what we pay for; so, do not undermine your worth for client results.
I agree that tracking workouts is also important.
