Independent Trainers: Do you rent space from a local studio? If so, how much do you pay?
Hi Jason,
I teach one class as an independent contractor at a local studio, and we have a 60/40 split. In that case, I have nothing else to do but show up. All the other logistics are done for me.

Most of my relationships are based on straight pay or a split, or a bonus based on number of students. There are a couple of places where I have done one on one sessions. In one of those they set the prices based on the experience level of the teacher, and the teacher pays a rental out of that fee and keeps the rest. It is about 20 dollars an hour.
Hi Jason,
I’m in the same boat as Karin is. I see that the 60/40 split seems to be a number that has been adopted to more than one parts of the country. I don’t like to rent from others because I usually don’t work at any place full time, so for me the % option works better. Although with some negotiating this number can be a little different than 60/40.
Hi Jason,
As an independent most either pay one set monthly fee as if you would if you were renting an apartment or paying a per person rate (i.e. $20 per hour session completed).
When teaching classes some get paid a per class fee or hourly rate depending on how many classes they teach.
All depending upon the rental space, some places do give multiple options. I would check around the local area and see what’s being asked to get a better feel.
Most places are negotiable. I’ve paid everything from 40% flat rate, to 30% with a minimum of $20, to a flat $30, to $5 per person. Finally, one place wanted a flat $100 per month for up to 10 hours per week; that was a good deal but it was 10 miles from my client base and very small with no childcare.
