Exercise stimulates the body’s many systems to respond accordingly. When a person consistently participates in an exercise program the body will adapt in direct response. If the execise program is appropriate, the body will improve the target systems. If the program is not appropriate, the systems will be affected in a negative manner.
This is similar to the body’s reaction to medications. The right medication used appropriately will yield the desired results. Too little or too much medication will not produce the desired affect and may cause more harm.
Id say the idea of it is great, but the execution is terrible.
In my experience the field is dominated by people who have gotten bachelors, masters, doctorates, certifications and licenses to practice but have ZERO experience in lifting.
Sure, on paper you can say what happens to the muscle when you go 80% of max for 12 reps.
Recognizing what a person looks at for 80%? Realizing a person cant do an amount? Understanding they could do much more? Nope.
They may know how to do a squat, but not the 5 varieties of it.
People need to do the classwork but put time in they gym to really understand how the body works.
Wow, I know this was asked quite a while ago, somehow I missed it!
Exercise is THE MOST IMPORTANT medication I take: it’s my mood elevator, my anti depressent, my blood stimulant, my heart protector, my muscle builder my brain clarifier.
I love it when my clients understand the benefits and when I hear my daughters say “I need to go workout”, and I hear my 83 year old dad say ” I joined a gym”, I feel elated!
The benefits to me are miraculous.
A great question Joanne! Exercise as “medicine” has been researched and reported on since the beginning of time (ok, maybe not that long), and there seems to be little doubt of the healthy effects of exercise on the body. But I also see and use exercise as a HUGE “medical” benefit to the client’s mind. I work with a lot of female athletes, and it never ceases to amaze me how when we work together on getting in better condition, on visualization and one improving their skills how their confidence level SOARS! Confidence in sports performance is everything! And when the athlete feels confident in her body she feels confident in her performance – GREAT MEDICINE!
But this works not only in the athletic world! I have worked with many elderly clients or clients with health issues, and again it is so very rewarding to see their quality of life improve with their quality of strength and fitness. They feel better prepared to deal with their everyday tasks, and with that you can just see them improve their ability to handle the health and medical issues that they may be facing on a daily basis. I LOVE IT!!!
