Hi everyone, I’m a NASM-certified personal trainer that does training out of my home gym (also a mom to a toddler 🙂 ). I recently received a request to train a pair of friends off-site. I’m wondering what is a reasonable “travel fee” to charge them? I want to make it fair but also worth my time since I’ll be away from my little one and possibly have to arrange child care. I’ve heard from 1-2 people that charging an additional $10-$20 per session is reasonable? Would this be split between the training partners, or charged per person? Thanks in advance!
Your home rates are going to be based on what the going rates are for training in your area along with other factors. As far as off site training goes, you then take that rate and charge what everyone else has been saying ($10-$20 more per session)and on how far you have to go. Another factor with off site training is that you have to account for not only the mileage but how long it will take you to get to the site, train and then drive back to your site. This is what a lot of people don’t think about. You might be losing a whole hour going back and forth or more. So take in the total amount of time traveling back and forth along with the training session, to come up with the rate. If it’s way more than what the client is willing to pay, then tell them that they may be better off with a trainer closer to them or to come to your location. Just be honest with them because you make your living off of time and they should be understanding of that. You don’t want to waste their time and yours.
