OK. My husband and I own a personal training business. He travels to the clients, and I run the business end of it. We want to expand and hire one or two more trainers to cover territories that we cannot reach (and I want to cut down his working hours). What is the best way to contract someone to work for us? We know it will be an independent contractor, we know we will check credentials, liability insurance, etc. We need to know tips to safeguard our business so the trainer cannot take clients from us. We are supplying all of the clients. Specifically, I am concerned about how to pay. Weekly? Monthly? At the end of the contract? All of our clients have a minimum of a 1 month contract. Any advice will help.
How often you want to pay him it’s up to you. Whatever feels more comfortable to your business and yourself, then that’s what you should do. Bi-monthly is probably the easiest way to go about it.
As for making sure you will not lose any clients to the new trainer, this is a very gray area to work with. Unless you really trust this person (and even then this can be questionable), it’s hard to do. Here are a couple of options for you:
1. All of the sessions have to be paid to you (or your company) directly and make sure your clients have to sign something every time they complete a workout. This way you will know when they did a workout and keep tract of their sessions.
2. This option is a MUST!! You or your husband need to train all of your clients at least once or twice every pay period. This will help you establish face-to-face relationships with your clients and also keep an eye on your trainer and know first hand of any issues that might come up. Also, inviting your clients to social events it’s a good way for you and for them to get to know each other and establish better and closer relationships. Never let an opportunity go by and not get to know or meet any new clients you get.
