One other thing to consider is the portability of the name. For example, if called your business “fitness on the green”, because you were working near a golf course (I know that is a silly example), or “City Slam”, and you moved to a more rural setting it would be hard to take the name with you. Old contacts can sometimes become helpful again, assuming they can find you.

Hi Jaclyn,

I just went through this so I understand how difficult it can be! It was harder than I thought, since I chose not to use my name for a few different reasons. I also found that domain names get taken very quickly because I wanted the word “fitness” to be a part of my business name.

Some things that helped me were the following:

–Keep it short and simple to spell. It it’s too trendy or unusual to spell, people will get frustrated before they ever get to your website.
–Make sure the domain name is available (I went through a few of these!). Most people are familiar with a dot com, although many new domain endings are currently coming out.
–A few key words or popular search terms in the name would be helpful for web browsing when people are trying to find you.

Hope this helps you and good luck!

Christine

This is a popular question here :-). In my opinion having a business with your name on it, it’s always a good way to go. If this is your brand and philosophy that you will be promoting and teaching to others, why not having your name behind it as well? For example, I took the first five letters from my last name and combined it with “Fit”.

Good luck to you!

Best
Harris

This is a very personal decision and a very important one also.
You know your market, you know yourself better than anyone.

Personally, I don’t like “cute names”. I tend to like short and to the point names.
