I have an assessment event interview for a personal trainer position – any tips?
I already work for a gym but on a self employed basis so the interview was over in 10 minutes, he just said he liked to see i was enthustiatic about PT! Im a bit nervous, have tried to prepare but just wondering if anyone had any tips, or has been through anything like this themselves! Thanks in advance
Hi Anna,
Don’t be nervous. Just follow his instructions and understand what he is looking out of the interview with you and then do the task. I’m sure it will be something well within your experience as a trainer. The manager might very well give you a scenario of a potential client and then ask you to take him through the steps of assessing and then prescribing a program for this client. The manager might also ask you to take him through a short workout to see your style of instruction so just treat him like any other client :-)!…just don’t kill him…or do ;-)!
Best,
Harris
One of the things that has always fared me well, both in personal training and in other business, is to learn how to listen to the client FIRST. Sometimes we can immediately see things we think they “need” and it’s tempting to jump right in with that. But sometimes we have to back up a step so we can go forward more efficiently.
Good luck!
Hi Anna. This may be coming too late to help you at this point, but in case it isn’t, and in case others may find themselves in the same or similar position, I still want to answer.
I have had to do this before both in-person and over the telephone. The best single advice I can give is to keep it simple but show enthusiasm for what you’re doing. I train my clients by the ‘show-tell-do’ method and that will probably serve you well in this circumstance. This will show the owner/manager that you can reach clients no matter which method they learn by, and that you understand the exercise by being able to show and explain it. Good luck, I hope this helps.
