I have a new client that has a heart defect and a resting heart rate of 91.
The client told me that when she works out it can jump close to 200. She was given Beta Blockers years ago from the doctor, but stop taking them because she said they made her too tired all the time. She also told me that she knows when she needs to slow down or stop pushing to hard. I am pretty hesitant about the situation.
Now mind you I am new to the field and this is my first client. Any advise on the situition or even things I should stay away from?
Thank you.
Hi Mandy,
I want to echo the advice of the others. Absolutely no training until she is cleared by her doctor.
I am most concerned, though, about her non-compliance with her prescribed medication which she told you about. I have heard that complaint about beta blockers but her cause of action should have been to consult with her doctor and find possible alternatives rather than stopping the medication and hoping for the best.
Remember that your certification qualifies you to train the ‘apparently healthy’ (at least that what I assume since your profile is not complete). Her specific situation could cause a potential cardiac emergency even though she states that she knows how hard to push and when to slow down.
I empathize with your situation. This is your first potential client, and that first client is hard enough to find. Of course you are anxious to train somebody and get started. I am not saying to train or not to train but I would weigh the pros and cons from every angle.

I agree with Paul and Harris
I can imagine that you are anxious to begin your career but take a pause and re think it until she gets clearance. Even then, how will you make sure she takes her pills?
I would not only get a written clearance from her doc but you need to release yourself from any and all liability if you decide to take her on
You could always do only strength training with her and NOT do any cardio.
Hi Mandy,
I wouldn’t do anything with her until she sees her Dr. & gets that situation under control & is cleared for exercise. I definitely sympathize with you since this is your first client – but you don’t want her to be your last. That is not a good situation she’s dealing with. Good luck Mandy – I hope everything works out.

Hi Mandy,
She will need to be cleared by her doctor before doing any physical activity (at least with you or any other trainer). Once she gets the clearance you should contact her doctor and keep an open communication with him/her regarding your client (if you decide to take her). If you are not feeling comfortable training this client you should refer her to someone who has more experience training these type of clients. Also she might have other medical conditions that could make things even more complicated (for you and her). Her HR is too hi for training. Don’t forget to have her sign any waivers and liability releases as well. I hope this helps.
Best,
Harris
