I have a new client (37yo) with varicose veins.
The veins are of moderate size and run along her thigh. (They are visible through compression pants.) Are there contraindications for exercise w/ this issue? Is it necessary to get clearance from her doc before proceeding with training? (She is currently sedentary and has been since the birth of her child 6 yrs ago.)
Have you taken a thorough medical history? Does she have any pain with them? Has she had them checked by a physician? Does she have high blood pressure or did she while pregnant? When was her last physical?
Answers to those questions should give you more information as to whether they’re an issue that needs to be followed up with by a physician before proceeding. If she does have varicose veins that are problematic, you will want to modify exercises that increase the pressure in those extremities and gain any guidelines from a physician.
Hello Courtney Jenkins,
I agree with you, better safe than sorry…if you are concerned, check with her doctor.
Like always, make sure you explain that she needs to listen to her body. I see many people, men and women both, who are not bothered physically by this condition.
Take care,
Natalie
