I have 2 clients, age 60, over weight, total knee replacement one year ago. what to do next?
both have been using weight machines without incident but would like to change up their routine but every time I try to incorporate a new free weigh lower body exercise they don’t want to do it for fear it will hurt their knees. They are doing the leg press, leg curl, leg extension machines now and have no problems. Are there lower body free weight exercises that do not include, squats, lunges, steps???
Much agree with Susan + Joanne above. In addition to help with fear: give some easy exercises at first (ala post-rehab) that are comfortable for the client. Try to give functional movements with examples of such…like baby squat( very small range/showing how to properly hip hinge) getting water from a low cooler. Use a 1/2 foam roller under feet to help if necessary.
BEST: POOL!!!
I would not do any open chain exercises until clients are well healed and balanced movement is seen. Lying exercises like ham ball rolls or table slides, band work, etc. are all good and build strength.
I have a client in her late 60’s with a hip and knee replacement who is limited in what she can do. TRX Suspension training has made a big difference for her. She’s able to do squats and balance work as well as strengthen her core and entire body. She loves it and it enables her to do things she might otherwise not be able to do. We also do other types of functional training using med balls and stablitity balls.
