I’ll get the ball rolling by asking you this – does health and fitness play a significant role in your own life? Because if it doesn’t & you’re just looking for a new career, I would move on from this. But if it does, you’re in the right place & will get some really good advice on this forum. It definitely all starts for having a passion for fitness & then spreading the good word to others. Like any craft though, you need to be educated. You should decide that route first – college curriculum or certification agency. There’s where you should start. Good luck & hopefully we’ll be hearing from you.
The answer Paul gave you is a very good one. This industry is a great one to be in, but it requires a lot of dedication and time spent in keep educating yourself if you want to be a top trainer. We all started form the bottom at one point and climb up form there. But, if you are going to be in this for the long haul then you will need to be involved with as many aspects of this business as possible. It’s a slow process, but if you do it correctly then you will be a successful one.
This question comes up in this forum every few days. Below I have a link to a similar question to yours that was asked a few days back. There have been many great questions and answers though out the years, so if you have time to go over as many as you can you will find a lot of useful information. There is no right or wrong way to go about this but keep in mind that there is a lot of competition out there, so being as much as informed as you can it will play to your benefit.
And as Paul mentioned, you will get many great answers here. I wish you good luck!
I highly recommend getting certified with ACE if you indeed decide to pursue this as a career. I am a very new trainer myself and its definitely frustrating hearing constant no’s but sooner or later someone will say yes. It’s A LOT of work. I am glad I took time to figure out what I was getting myself into. I am at a private studio meaning it will probably be an even slower climb but it’s a non pressure situation where I am. I need that right now.
Education is the way to become a professional in any field. I recommend anyone interested in becoming a fitness instructor look into ACE courses, ACSM courses, or any other NCCA accredited certifying organization. There are schools near many major population areas for this as well. I used to teach for a post secondary school for fitness instructors when I lived near Denver, CO.
I teach a complete course for fitness instructors (classroom/practical experience) now through my business in Hawaii. I also teach CECs for those already certified. The CECs are definitely a write off so why not come take a continuing education vacation on the Big Island of Hawaii. The instructor course for preparing to get certified may also be, I never tried to get my first cert deducted off my taxes. Anyway, check out my website, www.hawaiifitnessacademy.com if you are interested.
