I am GF Instructor and have been teaching for gyms for a long time. But they usually handle everything( insurance, waivers, etc.) I just received my personal trainer certification, and don’t even know where to start with this, if I was to go out on my own. I was asked to come up with a walking/running program offered a few times a week to a community, but I need to put in a proposal that would include all the cost of running this program. I am not sure where to start. Looking for a place to start. Especially for how much I should charge per class per participant etc. to cover things like insurance, paperwork, equipment if needed. I would appreciate any input! Thanks!
Congrats on getting your certification and also for receiving this new job opportunity. Here are few things you need to work/consider for this proposal (in no particular order):
-Provide your certifications/education/licenses/liability insurance
-A comprehensive business/fitness plan for this program
-Length of the program (4,6,8 weeks, etc.)
-Equipment you will be using (if any)
-Number of classes/day/week
-Participants you are willing to accept/class
-Cost/participant/class or session
-Location/times of the class
-Include any other trainers/instructors who might be helping you with the class
-Length of your contract with the community/organization you are going to provide the classes for
These are few of the things you will need to include in your proposal. I would also have a lawyer go over all of these and make sure you are legally covered from all angles and eliminate any unpredictable issues/obstacles. As far as fees goes, I’m sure you have done your research on how much you need to be compensated for your time and for any equipment you will need to use/bring/buy (also include it in your proposal). Don’t be intimidated by this project since you are in the control seat and calling the shots. They asked you to help them with this class, so this is something that could become a larger project/opportunity for you.

It is hard to think of anything Harris has not. His answers are always extremely thorough. I would probably just suggest you make sure to check whether the location you wish to use charges to use the space, and if it does that you build that into what you will charge.
Even if you are going to be the one running the program you are going to want to have subs lined up for emergencies, and you definitely want to think out their professional relationship to you: taxes, non competition, their insurance status“.

Also include when you will be paid, monthly, bi-monthly? Don’t sweat it, make it a simple document. Look on line for proposal formats and fill in the blanks with the details Harris has listed. Even if you under sell for your first time that is fine, just leave yourself a contractual clause for fee review.
