I am looking to have a fitness class for disabled adults. Armchair type fitness.
It would be helpful for anyone on this forum who might want to answer if you could tell us whether there is a specific question you might have (e.g. where to find resources on writing such grants), or a general question (e.g. does anyone have experience in writing such a grant or creating such a program who can advise me), or a topic which might be of general interest you would like to raise (e.g. What do you feel about creating special population classes, as opposed to creating general programs with systems to allow a range of abilities, and what are the best mechanisms by which we can figure out which types of programs may be the greatest benefit to a community). Thanks.
There is a program on American Public Broadcasting that you can probably find in Canada or on the web called, Sit and Be Fit.
And any exercise I can think of can be regressed to a seated position. Use a little imagination. I teach CEC courses and include the concept of using Smart Steps to bringing fresh ideas to your classes. They are:
Use your imagination.
Experimenting with possible combinations before you introduce them to a class.
Decide which movements do and do not work for your purposes.
Think through how you would teach the movement combination.
Work on cues for the movement combination.
Then try them in an appropriate class setting.

Hi Laurie,
I’m a full-time BWY yoga teacher and created something called The 15 Minute Yoga Lesson Planner which has lots of “Chair Yoga Exercises”. It’s really easy to create chair yoga lesson plans. You can take a peak at it here: http://georgewatts.org/yoga-lesson-plans/.
I also created something called the “Chair Yoga Workshop Kit”. If you’re considering hosting a chair yoga workshop, the Chair Yoga Workshop Kit™ was designed for you. It has absolutely everything you need to host and promote a successful chair yoga workshop. You can find out more here: http://georgewatts.org/chair-yoga-workshop-kit/.
Om Shanti,
George Watts
