i am just getting started personal training i have no idea of what i needed to do to start taking on people
Scott Shelanskey,
You could find a mentor through www.SCORE.org who have free business seminars run by retired entrepreneurs. Everyone else gives you good insight to get started. Try to enjoy the ride.
Take care,
Natalie aka NAPS 2 B Fit.
Scott, first welcome to the fitness community. I am biased, but I truly believe this is the best profession in the world.
Agree if the Mentor, publish profile, explore interning and shadowing.
First 2 things to do as a new trainer.
1. Find your voice or elevator pitch. This is simply the answer to the question, “What do you do?”
i.e.
“I coach busy professionals to get in great shape in the shortest amount of time.”
“I’m a fitness trainer for active adults who want to live life to the fullest, who want to share life with their grandchildren.
Find what your truly passionate about and create your elevator pitch so that other people know who you are and who you serve.
2. Find the 2 busiest trainers in your area or health club, let them know your skills / elevator pitch.
The busiest trainers usually can not fit any more clients into their books so when they get a referral, they will pass them onto someone who took the time to ask for those referrals. At least the ones who match your interests or experience.
The busiest trainers also do not see you as a threat. They are to busy for that. Mediocre trainers are the ones who will not share or network with you.
Bonus: I really suggest following Sherri Mcmillan. She is contributor on this site as well as many others. She has been very successful and her newsletters are full of business strategy for all levels of trainers.
hope this helps !

I too am just beginning as an ACE trainer in Jacksonville, FL. I’m looking to train weight loss clients and those who are very overweight. I do not have an LLC setup yet and just got my liability insurance setup today through Hoffman Insurance Services. Please network with me and for those just starting out as well, let me know what helped you most with establishing rates and packages OT if you got setup in a gym.
