I am a personal trainer and teach small group personal training. To play background music, is a license required?
I have read articles about needing special licensing to play background music. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! Gina
Hi Tonya,
Is their music mixed for choreographed type group fitness? I also read their licensing information and they explain that you still need music licensing from ASCAP, BMI. https://www.powermusic.com/Music_licensing.html
Playing music for a class or in a gym is considered public performance, even when it’s small group training. You need ASCAP, BMI, or SEASAC.
Or, you can use music that is license-free. (The stuff that you buy from itunes, Spotify, the music store typically is NOT license-free). There are a few yoga dj’s that compose their own music and release it license-free, although that’s probably not the vibe you’re looking for.
What if your small group personal training is not synced to music or choreographed would a business account (one that pays the licensing fees included in the membership) Like Pandora Mood Media who pays the licensing fee cover the music licensing law? I play music to fill the silence while I train.
Does anyone pay a music license fee and can share what on average they charge for an independent contracting personal trainer?
Thank you.
Gina
